Authentic Living – April 15, 2017 – Meditation Empowerment Workshop

Saturday, April 15, 2007
2:00pm to 4:00pm

Meditation Empowerment Workshop Intensive with Isis
“Authentic Living”

Treat yourself to an afternoon of transformation and give your meditation practice a boost!

This 2 hour intensive is designed for those who are ready to dive deep into the process of self-discovery. Through this series of Meditation Empowerment Workshops, Isis will lead participants in practical techniques to improve your meditation practice and help new students develop good habits from the start. During each workshop, we’ll cover different topics and discover how to apply mindfulness skillfully to create the brightest, happiest life possible. Adults at all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, will benefit from this workshop.

During our workshop on Authentic Living, we’ll address the challenge of living in a world full of unobtainable ideals. We’re constantly bombarded by advertising telling us we need to be someone else. In the world of social media, we find ourselves comparing our lives to the snippets shared by others. Even on the spiritual path, we find ourselves trying to measure up to Saints. We each exist as perfection in the imperfect world. During this workshop, we’ll discuss how to let go of the fantasies and embrace the real, Authentic you.

“The strength of the meditation done via Skype was as strong as the meditation done in person at the Dharma Centre. Distance and timezones don’t matter when you’ve got an experienced teacher to meditate with.”              ~J.P. (London, England)

“It was wonderful to attend the meditation hall via Skype. It really felt like my room was an extension of the Dharma Center for the hour. The meditation was awesome, and the talk was practical and enlightening! Thank you for having a way for people to attend no matter how far away they physically are. Namaste!” ~Brian

February 2017 Newsletter

Join our Mailing List to have the monthly calendar and newsletter delivered to your inbox!

In case you missed it, here’s our February Practice Tip & News:

When we quiet the mind, the body knows what to do. We breathe, our hearts beat, and our body processes food all without our thoughts having to tell us how. When it comes to playing our parts in this world, we also know what to do. However, the endless cascade of thoughts keep us trapped in ideas and interpretations that can cause us to waffle and suffer. With consistent practice, we can remember how to listen, quiet the mind and trust ourselves.

The work I and other teachers do at Dharma Center is a prime example of being willing to trust and act. I am amazed and thrilled we are still here after more than 18 years. Throughout this adventure, I have simply done as I’ve been told. Of course, Eternity, or as Rama put it “The Company” doesn’t issue orders in words. Rather a directive is given through feeling, inspiration, and intuition, which when followed opens the mind to a deeper and more profound awareness.

Even when we trust completely, it’s natural to try to understand the workings of the universe. I’ve often questioned why a disabled woman who cannot always get dressed before noon would be given a task to run a meditation hall. I know the why’s of life are never really answered, but if I allow myself to philosophize, I think it’s because Dharma Center was never meant to become a serious mega-empire marketing Enlightenment. (Although I will admit at times that prospect sounds exciting!) Rather Dharma Center was born to be a fun and inspiring place where we can practice and be real with each other.

Dharma Center has gone through many shifts in the past, and we’re changing once again. For many years, we’ve used tuition as a tool to preserve our classes as a space for people who are willing to invest in their own development. Our first 8 years of free classes taught us people who pay are much more likely to practice on their own in between classes, so we added a small tuition. This policy has brought us an excellent group of dedicated students, some of whom have grown into wonderful teachers.

As our world faces even more uncertainty and turbulence, we’re being moved to respond to this suffering in a big way.

We know not everyone who meditates is interested in Enlightenment; however it’s clear that everyone can benefit from the practice of meditation. Meditation and mindfulness increases awareness, improves concentration, decreases stress, slows aging, and teaches us acceptance of ourselves and others. To help alleviate the suffering many people are feeling, we want to share this powerful practice with anyone who is interested. Beginning February 1, our weekly classes will be Free.

We encourage those who find value in our classes to pay what they wish to support Dharma Center, but there will no longer be a set tuition. We also hope you will bring friends who are curious about meditation so they can find balance, joy, and peace. The weekly classes are our gift to you.

We will also continue holding a space for people who wish to dive deeper into personal development. For those who are ready to invest in their spiritual education, we’ll offer Meditation Empowerment Workshops, as 2-hour intensives and through member-only retreats. New topics for each workshop will be posted on our website. The workshops held at Dharma Center will have Skype access and Members will be offered a special rate for these events.

In the coming months, we’ll continue to improve our Membership program to thank the people providing the main support for our work of sharing meditation and assisting the Awakening those who wish to free themselves from suffering.

The success of this big change depends on you. It also means our 2017 Fundraiser is even more important than ever. We hope you can attend the Rama Birthday Celebration of Light concert on February 4th, and support Dharma Center by selecting one or more of the fabulous fundraiser gifts between now and when the fundraiser ends in April.Everyone who contributes any amount to our fundraiser will receive an unpublished Rama talk!

Please see our fundraiser page to reserve your ticket and how you can participate in the fundraiser. Also, no one will be turned away from the Rama Birthday celebration due to lack of funds. If you need help purchasing your ticket, please contact Isis.

Thank you for helping us share the Light for all these years!!!

We look forward to sitting with you soon!

January 2017 Newsletter

In case you missed our January 2017 newsletter & calendar email:

Happy New Year!

As we cross the threshold into a new year and begin to train ourselves to write 2017, it’s an excellent time to train our mind to see the beauty inherent in this world. We have within us the capacity to experience deep gratitude, which unfolds into joy, which ultimately dissolves into peace. All of this is here, right now. At the bottom of this email is a video link to a 20 second meditation technique which will help guide you to this powerful inner reservoir of limitless peace.

This video gift is a small taste of what is waiting for you at Dharma Center when you join us for a class and meditation practice session.

In addition to our regular Saturday 11am class, there will be a special New Year’s Eve meditation tonight with Teresa at 7:45pm to celebrate the end of 2016.

We’re excited about the possibilities to share Light taking shape in

2017! To kick off our 2017 fundraiser, musician and composer Milo Matthews is donating a concert! We could think of no better time than to hold it in honor of Rama’s birthday.

We’ll have our celebration a few days early, on Saturday February 4th at 2pm. Tickets are available now. Space on the patio is limited, so don’t wait to reserve your spot! There will also be a class that morning and also on Rama’s actual birthday the following Thursday.

This concert is part of our fundraiser series for 2017. We’ve begun listing enticement gifts, including a rare signed Rama poster and Isis’s Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Topics for the Melting Pot Buddhism classes and a link to the Skype access class are listed and we’ve added a free Friday OM – Open Meditation for new students to learn about all that Dharma Center has to offer.

As of this writing, Dharma Center will finish the year with a loss of $811. Even though we didn’t quite make our goal, I count this as a success, since we were more than $3700 short only a few months ago.

THANK YOU to all of you who contributed through membership dues, tuition, retreat fees, and through gifts. Because of you, we will be able to continue to shine the Light through Dharma Center. We were also able to use a portion of the membership dues collected to support two of our favorite charities: Lions, Tigers, and Bears and the National Park Foundation.

In addition to keeping Dharma Center open, our 2017 Fundraiser will help build a subscription based website to share dharma talks by Isis with seekers around the world. A volunteer has diligently been editing talks recorded live at Dharma Center and we’re excited to begin work on the new distribution site later this year.

We’re also looking forward to creating more opportunities to partner with Rama Meditation Society and other Rama Lineage teachers in our quest to share the Way with other seekers as 2017 unfolds before us.

Don’t forget to reserve your ticket for the concert!

Only a few more reminders will be sent out, as we don’t want to overload your inbox.

We look forward to sitting with you soon!

December 2016 Newsletter

In case you’re not on our mailing list, here’s our monthly tip and newsletter:

Take a moment right now to say Thank You to your body, Thank You to your mind, and Thank You to your spirit. Your body has carried you, your mind has ordered the world for you, and your spirit has guided you to this moment of meeting the Dharma.

In our high tech information age, there are many places where we run across the terms meditation and mindfulness. However, meeting the Dharma in a deep way is unusual, and having the will and ability to practice the Path is even more rare. This is why we call our lives a “precious human birth” even when we struggle. Recognizing our good fortune to have a life in which we have the option to explore the deeper Truth opens the door to gratitude and the blessings of seeing the world through the lens of gratitude.

When we begin to walk the Path, we do it for ourselves, to relieve our own sorrow. As we progress, we begin to realize the Path is not about us. We find ourselves taking time out to meditate each day, not just for our own peace of mind, but also for the peace that radiates through us and into the world at large. We push ourselves to be present in each moment through mindfulness, not just because it makes us feel better, but because when we live in a high bright mind state, it alleviates the suffering of those we come into contact with, even if in just a tiny way. Through our practice, we experience how BIG this thing called life really is, and how joyous it is to fully engage.

Each day, I am humbled by the wonderful support from students and members, and from the Divine that emanates through each one of us. Because of you, Dharma Center exists to assist in the Awakening of those who wish to free themselves of suffering through the practice of meditation and mindfulness.

We have not yet met our goal of breaking even this year, but I have faith that those who can will step forward to help in whatever way fits their life.

Thank you to those of you who have already renewed your Membership and who have given extra financial support and volunteer hours. I also want to give a bow of thanks to our teachers, who share their wisdom freely with everyone who seeks. You are all deeply appreciated!

Please note our Saturday and Sunday classes will begin at 11:00am, and our Thursday classes will continue to begin at 7:15pm.

We look forward to sitting with you soon!  [CLICK HERE TO READ MORE]

November 2016 Newsletter

Join our mailing list to have our monthly newsletter & calendar delivered to your inbox!

Spiritual practice is not about becoming someone else. Spiritual practice is about learning who you really are; it’s about letting go of the conditioning that keeps you from experiencing your full potential. This process of refinement takes time, but the good news is we can enjoy each step of the journey as we unfold a deeper and deeper awareness of all that we are.

At Dharma Center, we walk the Path together, exploring the new territory we find within ourselves. Much of our work is internal, as we face our personal blocks and energetic obstacles. Having a practice group to join each week and/or each month provides motivation to keep moving forward and helps us laugh at the games the mind plays.

We’ve had some wonderful feedback about the Weekly Dose of Light, so we will continue sending you those bites of mind candy to inspire you in between classes.

As the year winds down, I like to let you know where we are with the accounting books. Our year of retreats was fun and empowering, however the retreats failed to generated the income we hoped. They also did not attract the abundance of new members we expected, although we did make a few new treasured friends. These factors combined with rising expenses has us deep into the red, with a current shortfall of $3763, which does not include our upcoming liability insurance payment and rent for the remainder of the year.

In order to preserve our 4 month cushion, I’ve put in $2148 so far this year. As many of you know, I live on a fixed income supplemented by support from my blog (www.jennasundell.com) and royalities from my books. I cannot fill the gap on my own. We need your help now to keep our doors open.

Dharma Center is the only physical location dedicated solely to the Rama Lineage. Most of us wild-eyed teachers roam the world with private students, but a few of us are called to sit in the open, sharing the teachings with the general public. We are not a charity, so all of our funding comes from generous benefactors like you. Please renew or become a Member today. Every dollar helps share the Light of this living lineage!

(The monthly pledge page will let you put in your own amount, and you can choose whether or not to make it a recurring membership payment on the PayPal screen.)

If you own a business, you can claim an advertising deduction by sending your check with a small stack of your business cards to share at the Center, and/or email me your business website after you make a PayPal payment and we’ll list it in the next monthly newsletter. Please check out our new Business Sponsors section below!

To help keep us solvent in the future we’ll plan a fundraiser next year based around making my past dharma talks available from a subscription website, with my Harley Davidson motorcycle and a signed Rama poster as two of the fundraiser gifts. We’re also in the final planning stages of offering an Intensive Retreat here in San Diego designed for beginners and those who want to jump start and empower their daily practice. Stay tuned for more details.

In order to promote greater attendance, this month I’ve made an addition to the calendar: topics for my Saturday classes are listed on the website through the remainder of the year. My dharma talks will still be spontaneous rather than a prepared speech, and of course, each class will also offer meditation instruction and practice.

If there’s a special topic you would like to see addressed, please drop me an email. If you’re not able to visit us in San Diego, let me know you would like it to be offered during the monthly Skype access class.

With the approach of Thanksgiving, we want to say how deeply grateful we are for all who practice meditation and mindfulness. Through your practice, you make the world a brighter place, one person and one moment at a time.

We look forward to sitting with you soon!

October 2016 Newsletter

Please note, we’ve had an unexpected schedule change…

There will NOT be class on Mondays.

Beginning October 16, please join Ros for Guided Healing Meditation on SUNDAY at 11am.

Read on for the monthly newsletter:

Greetings!

In her most recent class on Unifying Martial Arts & Meditation, Hathor discussed the Equinox as a time of Beauty, Balance, and Bounty. We can use this time of year to remind ourselves to notice the beauty of the changing world. As we allow the beauty of the moment to support us, we become aware of the balance found within our hearts, and the endless bounty nature provides with unconditional love. Take a moment right now to let gratitude flood your being with wondrous Beauty, Balance, and the Bounty of Autumn that is present right now!
This month at Dharma Center, Guided Healing Meditation with Rosleen is moving to Monday evenings. Begin your week with an hour of healing focused on wherever it is – physical, emotional, or spiritual – you need it most.
We’re also offering the opportunity to attend 2 classes via Skype this month. Visit our website to register today.
After experimenting last month with having the Volunteer Meeting immediately following Hathor’s class, we discovered we need to shift the start time of the Volunteer Meeting by a few minutes. Hathor’s class will begin at 1:30, and the Volunteer Meeting will start after a quick break at 2:45pm on October 9.
Beginning later this month, we will set up a new mailing list category for Weekly Inspiration – an email with a small bite of inspiration to chew on and help get you ready for the upcoming week.
Read on below for more classes and details about the benefits of being a Dharma Center Member.
We look forward to sitting with you soon!

September 2016 Newsletter

In case you’re not on our mailing list, here’s the September Tip and Newsletter:
Change is unavoidable. On the Path of self-discovery, we welcome change because every transformation allows us a new view, and an expansion of awareness beyond the limits of the current self. When things in our world change, the tendency is for us to clamp down on what we have and cling to it out of fear and uncertainty. As practitioners, we can instead observe this tendency and then consciously open up to the new adventures life presents to us.

Change can be a gradual process, or it can come all at once. This month at Dharma Center, we have both types of change happening.

As some of you may already know, for some time Lakshmi has been concentrating on building her own business, where she can share her wisdom and techniques independently of Dharma Center in a more fluid manner. As she becomes more involved with Integrated Meditation Studies, she will focus less on Dharma Center. Fortunately for us, she will continue to teach her monthly class for now. Please read more about Lakshmi’s new ventures on her website.

Here at Dharma Center, September will bring a sudden schedule change and the birth of #randomOM.

We’ll have a new class on Tuesday evenings, where Ros will offer her Guided Healing Meditation. We’ll also start evening classes at 7:15pm and Saturdays at 11:15am. This extra 15 minutes will make it easier for people to get to class after work during the week and after yoga at nearby studios on Saturdays. Our monthly class with Hathor and the Volunteer meeting will be now offered in tandem at a new time, beginning at 1:30pm for class and the volunteer meeting at 2:35pm.

These new times were at the request of our students. If there’s a time or day that works best for you, please let us know. It’s challenging to meditate in this busy crowded world, and we want to make it as simple as possible for you to join us.

To learn about #randomOM, please see our announcement below the calendar, and also note the last call for the desert in our Membership section.
